Hi! I'm Veerendra

I recently graduated with a dual degree (B. Tech. + M. Tech.) in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), India. I am excited about using technology to solve challenging real-world problems. I am particularly interested in the applications of Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, with a special focus on socially relevant projects.

My project Text2Narrative won fifth place in an international hackathon (AI for Education Global HackWeek, 2017). Text2Narrative is an educational tool designed for school students, it creates engaging instructional videos automatically from text (find my pitch of the project aired on NDTV here and sample output here). I also worked on pothole detection for the blind in the Indian context for my masters thesis.

I am actively seeking software engineer and product manager roles in innovative and socially relevant startups. Find more about me from my resume, full CV & LinkedIn.

MASTERS THESIS
THESIS

Title: Pothole detection to assist blind people

Supervisor: Prof. M. Balakrishnan, IIT Delhi

Description: This project is a part of MAVI (Mobility Assistant for Visually Impaired) and aims to detect potholes by combining information from multiple sensors like RGB camera, Laser and IR  and running computer vision algorithms. Also ported machine learning models on to Raspberry Pi to improve speed and reduce power consumption.

PROJECTS
PROJECTS
Text2Narrative

July 2017 - Present

Built an educational tool to create engaging videos from text. The video narrates the text with subtitles while automatically showing relevant images (see sample output). This is achieved by extracting key phrases from the text and searching the web for relevant images, and combining these images into an engaging video. Built in Python. ArbIIT

March - April 2017

Created a Reddit-like web application for IIT Delhi which has topic-wise channels for users to subscribe to. The users can also add events from the application to their personal calendar to get notifications before the event. Built with Django and MongoDB.

Advertisement Classification

March 2016

Built a machine learning classifier for web content to detect advertisements using Gaussian kernel soft margin SVM algorithm achieving 99.7% accuracy.

Bitonic Sort

February - March 2016

Implemented an efficient algorithm called Bitonic sort to sort numbers in parallel on multi-core machines. Built with OpenMP (C++).

AI bot for Game of Entropy

September - November 2015

Created an AI bot which excels in the game of entropy (computationally hard problem because the branching becomes exponential in the middle moves of the game) using Expectiminimax with alpha-beta pruning.

Multiplayer LAN game

March - April 2015

Developed a 2D real-time multiplayer shooting game with artificially intelligent bot players. Built for Linux in C++.

Dropbox

February  - March 2015

Created a dropbox-like cloud based storage system. Built in C++ using Qt, OpenSSL, pThreads.

LZW compressor

October 2014
